What English Bay Is

English Bay Beach sits at the western end of Davie Street where the West End meets the water. The half-kilometre stretch of sand runs from Gilford Street west to Stanley Park, with Beach Avenue running parallel along the seawall. The bay itself opens north toward the freighters anchored off the city and the North Shore mountains.

The beach has free public access, lifeguard service in summer, beachfront restaurants on Beach Avenue, and a year-round seawall walk that connects to Sunset Beach east and Stanley Park north. The Honda Celebration of Light fireworks take place over English Bay on three Saturday nights in late July and early August.

What to Do at English Bay

The reasons most people walk to English Bay:

  • Sunset on the sand. West-facing beach, the most-used sunset spot in Vancouver. Bring a coffee, find a log.
  • Seawall walk. Continuous paved path. Walk west into Stanley Park or east toward Sunset Beach without crossing a road.
  • Beachfront dining. Beach Avenue between Denman and Gilford holds beach-view restaurants, casual cafes, and ice cream spots.
  • Summer swimming. Lifeguarded in summer. Sandy shallow entry. Cold year-round (the Pacific is not the Caribbean).
  • The seawall art. A-maze-ing Laughter (the bronze laughing figures by Yue Minjun) sits at Morton Park at the eastern end of English Bay.

For event dates and seasonal beach information, see the City of Vancouver English Bay page.

Walking Routes From Century Plaza to English Bay

Verified walking times from 1015 Burrard Street (OpenStreetMap routing, 5 km/h pace):

  • Sunset Beach (eastern end of the bay, closest waterfront): 12 minutes, 1 km via Pacific Street
  • English Bay Beach (Davie and Denman corner): 20 minutes, 1.6 km via Davie or Beach Avenue
  • English Bay west end (toward Stanley Park entrance): 21 to 25 minutes
  • Stanley Park Second Beach (along the seawall): 32 minutes
  • Stanley Park interior: 32 to 39 minutes via the seawall

Sunset Beach and English Bay are connected by an unbroken seawall, so the difference is the starting point, not the experience. Most guests who care about getting to the bay quickly walk to Sunset Beach first and continue west along the sand.

The hotels closest to English Bay Beach itself sit between Denman Street and Gilford Street. Century Plaza Hotel sits further east at 1015 Burrard Street, which makes it a longer walk to the beach but closer to Davie Village, the Convention Centre, and Robson Street shopping. The trade-off: you give up some beach proximity for a more central downtown base, all-suite accommodations, an indoor pool, a 24-hour fitness center, and on-site dining at c prime restaurant and Beyond Coffee.
